The 80-20 Rule vs Perfectionism
December 10, 2021 - By Elisa Forte

Tips on how to be productive are everywhere. In that sense, it is interesting to compare two different perspectives: the 80-20 rule, or Pareto principle, and perfectionism.

Starting by considering that 80% of Italian territories was owned by 20% of the population, Vilfredo Pareto suggests that this relationship could have been working in other circumstances as well (https://www.huffingtonpost.it/chris-freytag/regola-8020_b_15407412.html). In short, this principle states that 20% of the causes is responsible for 80% of the results or, in the other way around, that 80% of outcomes are determined by 20% of the causes. If applied in our everyday life, this relationship suggests that we can have big results with little commitment.

On the other side, there is perfectionism, which is the tendency that tends to constantly raise the bar.

You might be wondering: which is the best approach? Although it is up to you to decide which one to adopt in your life, these two perspectives consider outcomes in a different way. Perfectionism always aims for improvement, while the 80-20 rule encourages committing the minimum necessary to reach 80%. Do you consider 80% as goal achieved? Do you usually commit the bare minimum or do you prefer to try your best? Let these questions guide you in order to understand which approach works better for you.
