While Markus doesn’t have a traditional “boss,” as mayor, he answers to everyone—whether they voted for him or not. “I don’t have one boss, but I have a thousand bosses,” he said. “The people who voted for me, and even those who didn’t, are all my bosses in a way.”

He also considers himself to be quite international. “I’ve spent a lot of time abroad—whether it was in Eastern Europe or the United States.
