Humans of the World: A Day with Rick Marsh in Tuxedo, the Gem of New York

Hello, world! It’s Marco and Erica from Humans of the World, and today we’re taking you on an exciting journey to Tuxedo, the Gem of New York, where we met Rick Marsh, a towering personality (quite literally at 6’5″!) and the heart of his community.

From the moment we arrived, Rick’s warmth and infectious energy filled the air. “You’re a people person, aren’t you?” we asked after just a few moments of chatting. His response? An unequivocal yes, shaped by decades of dedication to public service.

Rick’s roots run deep in Tuxedo. “I’m fifth-generation Tuxedo,” he shared proudly. Born and raised in the town, Rick embodies the spirit of community. He recalls growing up in a household where public service was a way of life. His father worked for the highway department, his mother served as town clerk, and their circle of friends included police officers and community leaders.

It’s no surprise, then, that Rick followed in their footsteps. He began his career as a police officer, serving 23 years in the force, including time on the Rockland County SWAT team. As he recounted his journey—from rookie to breacher team leader and eventually executive officer—we couldn’t help but be in awe of his dedication.

When we asked what inspired him to join the force, Rick said, “Watching my parents’ friends, who were police officers, encouraged me. I wanted to help people, save them in times of need.” And that he did. From responding to critical accidents on the New York State Thruway to receiving life-saving awards for using CPR and defibrillators, Rick’s impact is immeasurable.

Now retired from the police force, Rick has transitioned to a new role as deputy supervisor of Tuxedo. It’s a different kind of public service but no less demanding. “I don’t think I realized how much really has to be done,” he admitted with a chuckle. What was supposed to be a part-time role has evolved into a full-time commitment.

Rick’s latest accomplishment? The town’s Fall Festival. Formerly known as Family Fun Day, this year’s event was reimagined as a celebration of autumn. With 50 vendors, food trucks, bouncy houses, face painting, and even axe-throwing, the festival brought the community together in a way that felt both nostalgic and fresh.

Planning such a large event was no small feat. Rick, alongside a dedicated team, spent months organizing every detail. “We took Google Maps, laid everything out, walked the grounds, and measured it all to make sure it would fit,” he explained. From vendor placements to recreation activities, every aspect was meticulously planned.

When we asked about his favorite part of the process, Rick’s eyes lit up. “Today, right now, is the best part,” he said, gesturing to the bustling scene around us. “Listening to the kids in the bouncy house, watching them get their face painted, seeing parents enjoying the bands—this is what our town needs.”

We couldn’t agree more. Community events like the Fall Festival are about more than just fun—they’re about connection. And Rick Marsh is a shining example of what it means to dedicate yourself to others.

As we wrapped up our day in Tuxedo, one thing was clear: Rick’s love for his town and its people is as big as his stature. Thank you, Rick, for sharing your story and reminding us of the power of community.

Until next time.

with Love
