Discovering the Heart of Tuxedo: A Conversation with Deputy Town Clerk Marisa Dollbaum
As storytellers and curious explorers, we’ve met countless fascinating individuals, each contributing something unique to their communities. But every so often, someone like Marisa Dollbaum comes along—a person who exudes warmth and a deep love for their town. Recently, we had the privilege of speaking with Marisa, the Deputy Town Clerk of the Town of Tuxedo, the picturesque Gem of New York, during a festive celebration in the heart of her community.
From the outset, Marisa’s charm and dedication were evident. Dressed in an autumn-inspired jumper, she embodied the essence of the season and the festival itself. “My goal is to help the residents of Tuxedo in any way I can,” she told us. Her sincerity was unmistakable, and it quickly became clear why her colleagues and neighbours hold her in such high regard.
From Florida Sunshine to New York Seasons
Marisa’s journey to Tuxedo began far from its charming streets. Born and raised in Florida, she eventually moved to New York at 26, seeking a change of scenery and a new chapter in her life. “I loved Florida—the beach, the sunshine—but I wanted something different. My parents used to talk about the fall leaves and blooming springs up north, and I wanted to see it for myself,” she explained.
Living in New York City before settling in Tuxedo, Marisa experienced firsthand the resilience and adaptability the city demands. It shaped her, she said, preparing her for new challenges and teaching her to embrace change—a sentiment we wholeheartedly relate to from our own moves between Rome and London.
Finding Home in Tuxedo
Tuxedo became her home through her marriage, and over the past 13 years, Marisa has fallen in love with its quaint charm and close-knit community. “This place feels like home now,” she said, smiling. “The seasons, the people—it’s all so unique.”
Marisa entered local government serendipitously, starting as deputy town clerk without a full understanding of the role. Guided by her predecessor, Donna Matthews, she quickly learned the ropes and developed a deep appreciation for serving her community. When Donna retired, she encouraged Marisa to take over. Marisa has since been elected and reelected—a testament to her dedication and the trust she’s earned from the residents of Tuxedo.
A Day in the Life of A Deputy Town Clerk
As town clerk, no two days are the same for Marisa. From handling administrative duties to addressing residents’ concerns, her role demands a mix of careful planning and flexibility. “If a resident calls or comes into town hall, their needs come first. I want them to know that I’m here for them,” she shared.
She’s also instrumental in supporting the town board, coordinating meetings, and managing a myriad of legal and procedural tasks. “There’s a lot to juggle,” she admitted, “but planning ahead makes it all manageable.”
A Festival for the Community
Our conversation took place during Tuxedo’s Fall Festival, an event brimming with energy, laughter, and the smell of delicious food. Organized with meticulous care, the festival featured rides, crafts, contests, and, of course, Marisa’s signature touch of elegance.
“It’s a team effort,” she emphasized, giving credit to her colleagues and community members. From coordinating vendors to ensuring seamless parking logistics, Marisa and her team left no detail unchecked. “Watching the kids in the bouncy houses, hearing the bands play, and seeing families come together—it’s all worth it,” she said with a smile.
Reflections on Community
Marisa’s story is one of transformation and dedication—a testament to the power of community and the rewards of public service. Through her work, she not only serves Tuxedo but also strengthens its spirit, one thoughtful gesture at a time.
As we wrapped up our interview, we couldn’t help but feel inspired. Marisa embodies the essence of what we celebrate on Humans of the World: a deep connection to one’s roots, a commitment to growth, and a profound love for the people around us.
Here’s to Marisa Dollbaum and the many unsung heroes like her who make the world a better, more beautiful place—one town, one festival, one smile at a time.
Until next time.
with Love
