Exploring the World from Orange County with Steven M. Neuhaus: A Dynamic Tale of Global Leadership and Service

As we stepped into the vibrant heart of Orange County, New York in the Town of Tuxedo, the Gem of New York, we were greeted by a whirlwind of stories, energy, and passion from Steven M. Neuhaus, the Orange County’s sixth County Executive and a commander in the United States Navy. It’s no wonder that this area, home to over 400,000 people and the iconic West Point Military Academy, thrives as a hub of activity and leadership.

Steven’s story is nothing short of remarkable—a blend of local pride, global impact, and relentless service. Born and raised in Goshen to immigrant parents from Germany, Steven embodies the quintessential American dream. His journey from being a regular school kid to a global leader is filled with inspiration, humour, and dedication.

Orange County: A Magnet for Greatness

The presence of West Point infuses the area with an unparalleled spirit. Steven shared how the academy attracts world-renowned figures—presidents, Nobel laureates, scientists, and musicians—all of whom pass through the region. “I’ve had the privilege of meeting incredible people,” Steven enthused, recounting encounters with personalities like Elon Musk, Barack Obama, Donald Trump, and Chief Justice John Roberts.

He fondly remembered meeting Gary Sinise, known for his role as Lieutenant Dan in Forrest Gump and for his philanthropic efforts for veterans. “Gary’s an amazing guy who truly gives back,” Steven said, reflecting the deep sense of community that defines the area.

From Military Missions to Local Governance

Steven’s dual roles as County Executive and Navy commander form a fascinating dichotomy. “The military is my favorite because those men and women write a check to the government that’s payable with their life,” he said with heartfelt conviction.

Yet his love for Orange County is equally profound. Whether it’s fixing bridges, building parks, or addressing crime, Steven’s hands-on approach defines his leadership style. “I’d much rather wear boots than a suit,” he joked, though his achievements speak volumes about his adaptability.

A Life of Service on a Global Stage

Steven’s military career has taken him across the globe—to Iraq, the Middle East, Asia, and Europe. He recounted delivering a State of the County address from Baghdad and coordinating efforts during the COVID-19 pandemic from afar. “I started fireside chats, inspired by President Roosevelt, to keep people informed and calm,” Steven explained.

Even amidst crises, Steven finds time for personal connections. “I officiated a wedding for a fellow soldier from Iraq,” he chuckled, showcasing his uncanny ability to balance duty and humanity.

Economic Growth and Community Vitality

Under Steven’s leadership, Orange County has flourished. His focus on economic development, public health, and infrastructure has created jobs and revitalized the area. “We’ve built new bridges, enhanced public safety, and fostered a thriving community,” Steven noted. His initiatives demonstrate how effective governance can transform lives.

Reflections and Aspirations

As our conversation unfolded, we were struck by Steven’s boundless energy and optimism. “I have four incredible kids who keep me grounded,” he said, his face lighting up. His international experiences have only deepened his belief in the universality of human aspirations: “Everywhere I go, people want the best for their families.”

Steven’s story is a testament to the power of dedication, resilience, and service. From the bustling streets of Orange County to the battlefields abroad, his impact resonates far and wide.

We left Orange County inspired, carrying with us the indelible spirit of a leader who truly embodies the phrase “Think globally, act locally.”
