A Conversation with Amanda Dana About Balancing Community, Nature, and Economic Growth
In the heart of the Hudson Valley lies Orange County, a region that seamlessly blends natural beauty, historic charm, and thriving commerce. Orange County, the first of its name among eight in the United States, holds an enviable position as a vibrant hub for tourism, economic growth, and community spirit. In our travels to the Town of Tuxedo, the Gem of New York, we met with Amanda Dana, the dynamic Director of Tourism for Orange County to talk about everything from the changing seasons to family life and the powerful role tourism plays in shaping the county’s identity and driving the region’s growth.
The Core of Orange County Tourism
Autumn, or as locals call it, fall, is the highlight of Orange County’s tourism season. With visitors flooding in for apple picking, pumpkin festivals, and breathtaking foliage, the region becomes alive with activities. Amanda highlighted the importance of leveraging this natural draw to drive economic activity:
“We see a lot of new visitors during this time of year. They come for the festivals and the foliage, but we aim to introduce them to our cozy downtowns and thriving craft beverage scenes.”
This strategy ensures tourism benefits both large attractions like Legoland and smaller, family-owned businesses.
A Full-Circle Approach: Tourism as a Driver of Economic Development
The discussion emphasized how tourism feeds economic development. From promoting large attractions to supporting local businesses, Orange County takes a holistic approach:
“Tourism is economic development,” Amanda explained. “When someone visits and falls in love with our area, it often leads to more—people choosing to live here, work here, and invest in our community.”
Amanda shared her personal journey—balancing her role as a mother of four with her passion for tourism. Her life’s path, from hospitality to real estate and finally back to her first love, tourism, mirrors Orange County’s focus on creating a community where work and family coexist harmoniously.
Why Orange County?
Orange County’s charm lies in its diverse attractions. The Hudson Valley’s natural beauty, historic sites, and family-friendly activities make it a destination for all seasons. Its proximity to New York City makes it an accessible retreat while retaining its unique identity as a welcoming community.
With initiatives funded by the county’s bed tax and bolstered by collaboration between local businesses and the tourism office, Orange County is poised to remain a top destination.
Amanda was quick to highlight the people behind the places. “The sense of community here is unmatched,” she said. “It’s not just about what we have to offer—it’s about how we welcome people into our story.”
Amanda’s leadership and vision ensures that its story remains compelling, inspiring both locals and visitors to embrace all the county has to offer.
As Orange County looks to the future, one thing is certain: its mix of natural beauty, economic opportunity, and community spirit will keep it at the forefront of tourism and development in the Hudson Valley.
Until next time.
with Love
