Discovering Wellness with Alex Glasscock: A Path to Balance and Renewal
In a world constantly pushing us to achieve more, to keep moving faster, and to rise higher, there’s something undeniably powerful about slowing down and reconnecting with the world around us. For many of us, the constant demands of work, family, and daily life can leave us feeling overwhelmed, disconnected, and yearning for something more. But what if the key to finding true wellness lies not in striving for perfection, but in embracing simplicity, nature, and a slower pace of life?
This is the transformative journey that countless individuals are embracing as they seek balance in their lives.
In an upcoming episode of Humans of the World, Marco and Erica will embark on yet another inspiring journey, sitting down with Alex Glasscock, the co-founder of The Ranch—a world-renowned wellness retreat he runs alongside his wife, Sue. Together, they’ve turned a shared passion for nature and health into a transformative experience for countless people. Here’s the story as we experienced it, through Alex’s reflections and our shared moments of laughter and curiosity. From a successful career in finance to becoming the founder of a wellness retreat rooted in daily hikes, yoga, and plant-based living, Glasscock’s story offers a powerful reminder of how taking a step back can lead to a deeper connection with ourselves—and with nature.
A Walk Down Memory Lane
Alex’s story begins in Texas, where he grew up surrounded by nature. “My father would take us camping,” Alex shared, his eyes lighting up with the memory. Even as a child, he felt a deep connection to the outdoors—a sense of peace that would later become the cornerstone of his life’s work.
But like many of us, Alex didn’t pursue his early passions immediately. He embarked on a traditional career path in finance, building a business in mortgage financing. Meanwhile, Sue was flourishing in her gardening and landscaping business. For nearly 20 years, their lives revolved around offices and urban environments.
And yet, nature quietly called to them. “In our early 40s,” Alex told us, “we realized how eating healthy, being in nature, hiking, and focusing on sleep were the answers we’d been seeking for a more fulfilling life.”
The Birth of The Ranch
What started as a personal lifestyle shift soon blossomed into a vision. Alex and Sue wanted to share the benefits they’d discovered with others. “We were living this program ourselves,” Alex said, “and thought we should formalize it and share it with people.”
Thus, The Ranch Malibu was born—a sanctuary where guests could unplug, recharge, and rediscover themselves. And now, they’ve expanded their vision to the East Coast with The Ranch Hudson Valley.
The Program: An Ode To Wellness
The retreat’s program is meticulously designed to cater to diverse needs while fostering a sense of community. Each week, a group of 25–30 guests embarks on a shared journey, following a schedule that balances physical activity, rest, and introspection.
Here’s what a day at The Ranch looks like:
Early Start: Guests begin their day with gentle stretching at 6 a.m., guided by a soothing chime for those who need a nudge to rise by 5:30 a.m.
Hiking: After a nourishing breakfast, guests can choose between a two-hour or four-hour hike, tailored to their own pace.
Rejuvenation: Post-hike, there’s time for cold plunges, jacuzzis, and massages, as well as an opportunity for a restorative nap—something many adults haven’t indulged in since childhood.
Fitness and Yoga: The afternoons are dedicated to fitness classes and yoga, followed by a plant-based dinner.
Rest: By 8:30 p.m., guests are tucked in for a full night’s sleep, resetting their bodies and minds.
East Coast vs. West Coast: Seasonal Challenges
Bringing The Ranch to the Hudson Valley presented new challenges. Unlike Malibu’s sunny climate, the East Coast demands a dynamic approach to embrace all seasons.
“In winter, hiking in 40°F weather, when dressed appropriately, is refreshing,” Alex explained. And when snowfall graces the landscape, the experience becomes magical. Guests sled down hillsides to the lake, with fire pits and music creating an enchanting atmosphere.
A Holistic Approach
Beyond the physical aspects of wellness, The Ranch offers unique practices like energy healing, which Alex describes as profound. “It helps people uncover answers to life’s questions or connect with loved ones who’ve passed,” he said. The emphasis is on meeting people where they are and helping them leave with renewed energy and clarity.
Of course, nutrition plays a vital role. The menu is entirely plant-based, featuring dishes like gluten-free pizza that Alex promises are “extraordinary.”
A Shared Passion for Wellness
As Alex shared his journey, we couldn’t help but draw parallels to our own. Like Alex and Sue, we’ve built a life and career together, blending our passions into a shared mission.
And while we may not have 35 years together under our belts—yet!—we found inspiration in Alex and Sue’s partnership. They’ve created not just a business but a legacy rooted in love, health, and connection.
What struck us most was Alex’s dedication to helping others live healthier, happier lives. “It’s about meeting people where they are and helping them discover a more energized, long life,” he said.
For us, Alex and Sue’s story is a reminder that it’s never too late to follow your passions, embrace nature, and share your gifts with the world.
As we wrapped up our conversation, we felt rejuvenated, just like the guests who visit The Ranch. And we hope you do too—wherever you are on your journey to wellness.
