Finding Faith, Building Community: A Conversation with Father Richard Datos-Robÿn
When we sat down with Father Rick, the Rector of St. Mary’s in Tuxedo Episcopal Church, we weren’t just meeting a spiritual leader; we were meeting a storyteller, a historian, and a man deeply in love with his calling.
Father Rick is the 12th rector of St. Mary’s, a church with roots dating back to 1887. Its enduring legacy as a spiritual anchor in Tuxedo, the Gem of New York, is a testament to its faithfulness to the community it serves. But what we found most fascinating wasn’t just the church’s storied past—it was Father Rick’s personal journey to discovering his own path.
A Life Shaped by Faith and Discovery
Before becoming a rector, Father Rick didn’t imagine himself leading a congregation. In fact, he once aspired to work in museums. His passion for history and storytelling led him to work as a tour guide in Michigan, an experience that would later enhance his skills in preaching and public speaking.
However, life had other plans. While living in New Orleans, a friend invited him to Christ Church Cathedral, the Episcopal Cathedral of the city. What started as a few visits blossomed into something transformative. The music, liturgy, and deep sense of connection he experienced at the church “fed his soul” in a way he hadn’t felt before.
Through years of service—first as a Eucharistic visitor, bringing communion to those unable to attend church—he began to feel the pull of a higher calling. “Maybe this is what I’m supposed to do,” he told us.
Embracing Change and Building Community
Father Rick spoke candidly about the challenges and joys of leading a church in the modern era. Church attendance has shifted significantly from being a cultural norm to a deeply personal choice. While fewer people attend church out of obligation, those who do come are deeply engaged.
In Tuxedo, St. Mary’s benefits from its tight-knit community. It’s a place where families interact both inside and outside the church, fostering a sense of connection and mutual support. The revival of the Sunday school program is a testament to this, as the sound of children’s footsteps echoing into the service symbolizes a bright future for the congregation.
We were struck by how Father Rick described the church’s role in Tuxedo.
“Everyone in the community, regardless of their religion, sees this as the spiritual heart of the town.”
From local good works to global outreach, St. Mary’s impact extends far beyond its walls.
The Spirit of Inclusivity
One story that stayed with us was about a Buddhist woman who asked Father Rick to bless her home. Despite their differing faiths, she valued his spiritual guidance, showcasing how the church and its rector serve as pillars of support for everyone in the community.
“When I told her I work for Jesus,” Father Rick recounted with a smile, “she said, ‘I don’t care. I just want the house blessed.’” The moment, complete with holy water and incense, was a beautiful example of how faith can transcend boundaries.
Engaging the Next Generation
As hosts of Humans of the World, we’re always curious about how traditions adapt to modern times. Father Rick’s approach to engaging younger generations is rooted in finding God in everyday life. “We teach that God is all around us—in the leaves, in beauty, in order,” he explained.
The historic charm of St. Mary’s also plays a role. “The patina of this place feeds people spiritually,” he said, reflecting on the sacredness of spaces that point us to something greater than ourselves.
A Faith That Evolves
Father Rick also shared insights into the Episcopal Church’s unique position within Christianity. As an offshoot of the Church of England, it bridges the gap between Protestantism and Catholicism, preserving traditions while adapting to the needs of its followers.
This balance between reverence for history and openness to change is evident in how Father Rick approaches his ministry. His focus on fostering peace, kindness, and community is a reminder that faith isn’t just about belief—it’s about action and connection.
Our conversation with Father Rick left us inspired by his passion, humour, and unwavering dedication to his community. In a world that often feels fragmented, his message of unity, kindness, and finding beauty in all things resonates deeply.
As we wrapped up, we couldn’t help but feel grateful for leaders like Father Rick, who remind us that the heart of faith lies in the connections we build and the love we share.
For us, this interview was a glimpse into the life of a remarkable rector and proof of the enduring power of community and the beauty of a life lived with purpose.
Bravo Father Rick!
